AN EDUCATION

OF OUR DESIGN

EDUCATION OF OUR DESIGN

In 2019, NIYEC launched our flagship program, The Education of Our Design workshops. Workshops are open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged between 18-35. Through these workshops, we want listen and collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth to:

  • share our collective experiences in education

  • to learn about the history of education in Australia and the ongoing colonial legacy within the education system

  • identify solutions to re-design our education system from a position of self-determination and power, and;

  • together create a movement in calling for an education of our own design.

WHY

The current industrial-era education system is not enough to meet the needs of 21st century learners. It is our young people who need to be prepared to tackle current and emerging complex global issues, compete in a hyper-connected globalised society while passing on the oldest continuing culture in the world. Put simply, our education needs a redesign. NIYEC is about building a movement and backing the next generation to drive a new collective vision for education. One which is grounded in our communities and prepares young mob to tackle future challenges, navigate post-school pathways and finish schooling feeling strong in who they are.Recognising that this colonial legacy still impacts the learning journeys of Young Mob today,

Through these youth-centred, action-oriented workshops, we aim to:

  • understand the educational experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people;

  • drive discussions on the history of the education system and its impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People; and,

  • ask the crucial question “How would we design our own spaces of learning from a position of self-determination and control?”

If you’re interested in partnering, reach out to hayley@niyec.com.

We also welcome your support to expand these programs, donate directly or yarn with us on how to be involved.
