THE SCHOOL EXCLUSION PROJECT RESEARCH REPORT

The School Exclusion Project Research Report documents some of the ways in which that government schools across the Australian continent, from the nineteenth-century to the present, have excluded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This report has been written through an analyses of archival records, historiography, legislation, and policies. Together, the state and territory timelines in this report provide the first comprehensive historical overview of the exclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from schools.

This report was developed by a team of multi-disciplinary researchers, Samara Hand, Dr Beth Marsden, Dr. Archie Thomas & Dr. Mati Keynes.

This is the first research report produced as part of NIYEC Education Justice League an initiative designed to back the voices and agency of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people through the power of action research.

Learning the truth about school exclusion can be hard. You might know someone who has been excluded or you may have experienced exclusion yourself. NIYEC collaborated with a team of researchers, Samara Hand, Dr Beth Marsden, Dr. Archie Thomas and Dr. Mati Keynes to prepare this guide to equip you with the knowledge about school exclusion.

LUNCHTIME WITH NIYEC: INTRODUCING THE SCHOOL EXCLUSION 101 YOUTH GUIDE

Follow our discussion on The School Exclusion Project and our School Exclusion 101 Youth Guide. The guide is for students, educators, schools, caregivers and community. We had speakers Samara Hand, Renee Phillips, Anthony Wotton and Tarneen Onus Williams lead a discussion on how the youth guide can assist in challenging exclusion in schools. Anthony Wotton and Tarneen Onus Williams shared their experiences on what exclusion looks Iike for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.

The official launch of The School Exclusion Project Research Report. We held our launch event on 21 March 2024 signifying the importance of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination otherwise known as Harmony Day in Australia.
